ORIGIN Concept

OriginOPTIMISING the use of RENEWABLE energy !

Findhorn College is The Park's coordinating partner in an exciting EU funded research project aiming to optimising our use of locally generated renewable energy. Eight partners from 5 European countries are working together to create new ways to balance energy demand with renewable energy availability.

Our three GEN Europe ecovillage demonstration sites, The Park, Findhorn along with Tamera in Portugal and Damanhur in Italy, offer researchers diverse opportunities to test their sophisticated learning algorithms. Led by Heriot Watt University (HWU) in Edinburgh, ORIGIN stands for Orchestration of Renewable Integrated Generation in Neighbourhoods hence ORIGIN !

This project has received funding from the European Union's Seventh Framework course for research, technological development and demonstration under grant agreement no 314742.

At Findhorn we are monitoring over 50 homes, public buildings and local utilities - sending our usage and generation information to researchers at University of Strathclyde, Glasgow who, in conjunction with HWU team, are working out 'learning algorithms ' for the energy requirements of each participating home or business.

Weather data from The Park and regional weather stations are informing researchers at HWU with increasingly accurate weather predictions for location. There is of course an excellent correlation between forecasting weather and forecasting the generation of wind and solar energies locally.

We are now in the second year of the research. In the final third year, we anticipate reaping the benefits of the all 'learning'.

The final phase of the research will provide useful feedback to our community residents, recommending the usage of renewable energies when available. In some cases there will be actuated controls that take advantage 'automatically' and in other situations, prediction and generation feedback will be offered to support participants in making energy conscious choices.

We conducted a survey of energy usage values of the ORIGIN participating residents at The Park.

Findings are consolidated in this dissertation paper by Kristin Goldbach.

We will be hosting a dissemination conference on the results of this and similar research projects early in June 2015.
